Indian Minister tells tourists to avoid short skirts

A high-profile Indian political has said tourists visiting the country should avoid wearing short skirts in small towns.

Mr Sharma made his controversial announcement on Sunday, when responding to questions on the government's steps for tourist safety in popular destinations like Agra. He spoke of a list of dos and don'ts for visitors to India.
"When tourists arrive at the airport, they will be given a welcome kit which has a card with dos and don'ts... it has instructions like if they are in small areas, they should not roam around alone at night or wear skirts," he said.
Mr Sharma had India is a "cultural country" and "we have a different dress code for temples. Kindly keep that in mind while dressing up," ndtv.com reported.
Social media users jumped on his comments, stating he should be more concerned with ensuring safety in India

Minister of State for Culture, Mahesh Sharma had suggested foreigners visiting India should avoid wearing skirts or going out alone at night, and later clarified that he was referring only to religious places, and that he spoke out of "concern".
