ECG workers two-day strike against sale of company; begins

Electricity Company of Ghana workers (ECG) have started a two-day strike in protest against the privatization of the company.

according to Chief Executive Officer of MiDA, Owura Kwaku Sarfo, has assured Ghanaians that the decision to partly privatize ECG will create more jobs and that “was taken only after extensive consultations with a broad range of stakeholders, in-depth study, detailed technical reviews and thorough analysis” he stated

The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) have directed workers to attend to “critical areas like hospital theaters as well as security installations…should a fault occur.” They are also expected to wear red attires to work on Monday, September 5.

Earlier, the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), downplayed claims by the Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU) that the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact will impact negatively on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and result in layoffs.

The strike which followed the order of the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) will see workers lay down their tools today, September 2 and Monday, September 5.
