Donald Trump cancels summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un - White house
He said Kim’s harsh words made the historic meeting, scheduled for Singapore on June 12, ‘inappropriate’, and said canceling it was ‘for the good of both parties, but to the detriment of the world.’
Trump also issued a veiled threat to Kim, saying: ‘You talk about your nuclear capability, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray they will never be used.’
Trump’s letter also conceded that the pair had made progress, thanked him for releasing American hostages in North Korea, and said he hoped they could rearrange the meeting for a later date.
He wrote: ‘I felt a wonderful dialogue was building up between you and me, and ultimately, it is only the dialogue that matters.
‘Some day, I look very much forward to meeting you.
‘In the meantime, I want to thank you for the release of the hostages who are now home with their families. That was a beautiful gesture and very much appreciated.’
The summit was announced earlier this year, and heralded as a historic chance to move North Korea towards denuclearization.
But the newly-cordial relationship between Trump and Kim began to sour after Kim accused America and South Korea of using a planned military drill as a front for an invasion of his country.
He also said he would only dump his nuclear weapons if America did the same.
The cancellation came just hours after Kim invited foreign journalists to watch the destruction of tunnels used for nuclear weapons testing, raising hopes that the meeting would take place.
Relations between the men hit a historic low point last August over Kim’s testing of missiles capable of delivering a nuclear missile to America’s west coast.
He warned the dictator that refusal to halt the tests would bring ‘fire and fury like the world has never seen.’
