INEC wants to test-run the 2027 presidential election

INEC Considers Mock Presidential Election Ahead of 2027 Polls

By ZongoPlus Politics Desk | July 17, 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is considering conducting a mock presidential election ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections as part of efforts to improve the reliability, transparency, and credibility of the electoral process.

The proposed exercise is intended to test INEC's election technology and operational readiness before Nigerians cast their votes in the actual presidential election.

Why INEC Wants a Test Run

According to INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, the commission is exploring a comprehensive audit of its electoral technology systems alongside a simulated presidential election.

The mock poll would allow INEC to:

Test the performance of its election technology.

Identify and fix technical or operational weaknesses.

Evaluate cybersecurity and system resilience.

Improve public confidence in the electoral process ahead of 2027.

Lessons from the 2023 Election

The proposal follows criticism of the technological challenges experienced during the 2023 general election, particularly concerns surrounding the electronic transmission of results and the reliability of digital systems.

INEC says the planned audit and mock election are aimed at ensuring those issues are addressed well before the next nationwide vote. The commission is also reviewing its cybersecurity framework, including penetration testing, disaster recovery measures, and system redundancy.

Budget Still Under Consideration

INEC acknowledged that the proposed mock presidential election and technology audit were not included in its original budget. However, the commission said it is exploring ways to fund the exercises because of their potential to strengthen the integrity of the 2027 elections.

International Support

The announcement came during a meeting between INEC officials and the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery.

Montgomery said the United Kingdom has been closely monitoring INEC's preparations for the 2027 elections and reaffirmed Britain's commitment to supporting Nigeria's democratic institutions.

What It Means for Nigerians

If approved, the mock presidential election would not be an actual vote and would not determine any election outcome. Instead, it would serve as a nationwide simulation to test election procedures, technology, and logistics before the official polls.

Election observers say such exercises can help identify potential problems early, giving INEC time to make improvements before the 2027 general elections.
