Armed bandits have reportedly invaded Igbesi community in Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State, abducting the traditional ruler and several residents in a fresh attack that has heightened security concerns across Kwara South.

The monarch was identified as Oba Moses Oyinloye Iwedunmoye I, the Kabiyesi Onigbesi of Igbesi Land. Reports indicate that the attackers stormed the community at about 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, before taking the monarch and other residents away.

Attackers Invade Igbesi Community

According to reports, the suspected bandits entered Igbesi in the late hours of Saturday and carried out the abduction.

The traditional ruler was reportedly among those taken from the community. The exact number of victims remains unclear, although reports indicate that other residents were also abducted during the operation.

The incident has reportedly generated fear among residents, particularly as communities in Kwara South have faced a series of kidnapping and bandit attacks.

Growing Security Concerns in Kwara

The latest incident adds to a troubling pattern of attacks targeting traditional rulers and rural communities in Kwara State.

Earlier in 2026, suspected bandits abducted Oba Salman Aweda, the traditional ruler of Olayinka community in Ifelodun LGA. He was later reported dead while in captivity despite the payment of ransom.

Another Kwara monarch, Oba Simeon Olanipekun Oniwo of Afin, was also abducted in December 2025 and subsequently released after more than a month in captivity following ransom negotiations.

These repeated incidents have raised concerns about the vulnerability of traditional rulers and residents of remote communities in the state.

Authorities Yet to Provide Full Details

As of the latest reports, details concerning the identities of all those abducted, the whereabouts of the victims and whether the kidnappers have established contact with their families were still emerging.

Residents are reportedly appealing for urgent security intervention to rescue the monarch and other victims and prevent further attacks.

The latest kidnapping is likely to intensify calls for stronger security measures in Kwara South, where rural communities continue to face threats from armed criminal groups.

This is a developing story and further details may emerge as security agencies investigate the incident.
