ECOWAS to offer $65,000 to Nigerian startups — How to apply

Nigerian startup founders have a new opportunity to compete for a share of $65,000 in cash prizes under the 2026 ECOWAS Startup Awards. Applications are currently open, with the deadline set for August 31, 2026.

The initiative, organized by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), is designed to identify innovative businesses capable of growing within Nigeria and across the wider West African market.

How Much Can Nigerian Startups Win?

The total prize pool is $65,000, divided among the top three startups:

🥇 Winner — $30,000

🥈 First runner-up — $20,000

🥉 Second runner-up — $15,000

In addition to the cash prizes, selected entrepreneurs can benefit from investor exposure, mentorship, regional networking and a six-month acceleration programme.

Which Startups Can Apply?

The 2026 ECOWAS Startup Awards is targeting businesses operating in six major sectors:

FinTech

AgriTech and Food Systems

HealthTech

EdTech and Skills Development

CleanTech, Climate and Green Innovation

Tourism, Hospitality and TravelTech

The programme is expected to select 60 startups from across the ECOWAS region.

Who Is Eligible?

Nigerian entrepreneurs must meet several requirements before applying.

Applicants must:

Be citizens of an ECOWAS member state, including Nigeria.

Operate a startup that is registered and based in an ECOWAS country.

Have been operating for at least two years.

Have a functioning product or service.

Demonstrate market traction or strong potential for scalability.

Provide the required supporting documents.

This means the competition is primarily aimed at existing startups rather than people with only an unlaunched business idea.

ECOWAS is also encouraging women-led startups to participate.

Documents You Need

Before beginning the application, founders should prepare the following:

National passport or ECOWAS-approved identification document for the lead founder

Recent passport photograph

Business plan of no more than 10 pages

Pitch deck of no more than 10 slides

One-minute pitch video in MP4, MOV or WebM format, with a maximum file size of 100MB

Preparing these documents in advance can make the application process considerably easier.

Tips for Nigerian Founders Applying

If you intend to compete, don't focus only on describing your product. Your application should clearly demonstrate why your business deserves investment and regional expansion.

Highlight:

The problem your startup solves

The size of your target market

Your existing customers or users

Revenue and growth figures

Evidence of market traction

Your competitive advantage

How your business can expand across West Africa

How the prize money would accelerate growth

The impact your startup has on jobs or communities

Your one-minute pitch should also be short, clear and convincing. Avoid filling the video with unnecessary technical details.

Final Thoughts

The ECOWAS Startup Awards provides Nigerian entrepreneurs with an opportunity to gain non-dilutive prize money, regional visibility, mentorship and access to investors.

With $30,000 going to the overall winner, Nigerian founders who meet the eligibility requirements should consider preparing their applications early rather than waiting until the August 31 deadline.

Important: This is a competitive startup award, not a guaranteed $65,000 grant for every applicant. The $65,000 represents the combined prize pool for the three top winners.
