Another TikToker Arrested Over Alleged Offensive Remarks About President Mahama and First Lady

Ghana's Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) has arrested another TikTok content creator over alleged offensive comments directed at President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama, marking the latest in a series of high-profile social media-related arrests.

Suspect Arrested in Ashanti Region

The suspect, Rita Konadu, popularly known on TikTok as "Mamaone" (username @the_onlymamaone1), was arrested in Juaben in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday.

Authorities allege that the 49-year-old posted a TikTok video containing derogatory remarks about the President and the First Lady. She is expected to be transferred to Accra for further questioning as investigations continue. At the time of reporting, police had not announced any formal charges.

The CVET has not yet released a detailed statement outlining the specific offences under investigation or when the suspect will appear before court.

Latest in a Series of TikTok Arrests

The arrest follows several recent cases involving TikTok creators in Ghana.

Earlier this month, TikToker Camila Alhassan was convicted and sentenced to one year in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to offensive online content targeting the President and the First Lady. Another TikToker, Mahama Aminat, popularly known as "Bawumia Ba," has also faced legal proceedings over alleged threatening and offensive videos, with investigations continuing.

While some Ghanaians argue that abusive or defamatory online content should attract legal consequences, others have expressed concern about the implications for freedom of expression and the limits of criticism of public officials.
