Man Jailed for Attempting to Steal Police Armoured Vehicle in Ghana

A Ghanaian court has sentenced a man to prison after he was convicted of attempting to steal a Ghana Police Service armoured vehicle in a dramatic incident that unfolded in Nkawie in the Ashanti Region.

The convict, Ebenezer Frimpong, reportedly seized the opportunity after the police driver briefly stepped away from the vehicle, leaving its engine running. He allegedly climbed into the armoured vehicle and drove off, triggering a swift police response.

Dramatic Chase Ends in Arrest

According to police, the vehicle was being transported to the Ashanti Regional Police Workshop for servicing when it stopped near Nkawie Market.

Moments after the driver left to buy medication, Frimpong allegedly drove away with the armoured vehicle. A police patrol and a SWAT team quickly launched a pursuit, intercepting the vehicle near Mim, close to Abuakwa, and arresting the suspect. The vehicle was recovered without damage.

Court Proceedings

Following his arrest, Frimpong was charged in court. During earlier proceedings, the court ordered a psychiatric evaluation before the case continued. He later received a custodial sentence after the court found him guilty of the offence.

Police Commend Rapid Response

The Ghana Police Service praised the officers involved in the operation, saying their quick response ensured the recovery of the armoured vehicle and prevented any threat to public safety. Investigators also used the case to remind officers about the importance of securing official vehicles at all times.
